Producers persuaded both American and international producers
Story
In the midst of an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, is given a high-profile job she is ill-suited for, with tectonic effects on her marriage and political future. British governments allowed them to use real-world environments as filming locations for the series, including the fledgling U.S. Embassy (in Nine Elms), which opened in 2018. Britain allowed filming in the Foreign Secretary’s office, a rare honor given to any film or production, especially American.

The only unavailable location was Winfield House, the actual residence of the U.S. ambassador. Although it is accurately described as being the largest residential estate (11 acres) in London next to Buckingham Palace, producers used a country house outside the city for filming. There was a moment, I think it was about halfway through the show’s first season, where one of the subplots went in a slightly different direction than I expected, and that was a good thing.
Both the characters and the plot work
Otherwise, the dysfunctional relationships — both personal and professional — between the main characters kind of work, and I like it. The writers did a good job of keeping the plot focused and on point. Of course, it’s not very compelling, but it’s fun and at times engaging. “Madam Secretary” isn’t; nor is “Veep.” And that’s a very good thing.
Are they believable?
I should also mention that the acting and dialogue are pretty good, too. The casting was well done. Again: No. But that’s okay.
Please don’t screw it up
I realized very quickly that this was a fantasy, not reality. Netflix did a good job here. I’m really looking forward to Season 2.
