Story
It follows Madeline Matlock as she re-enters the workforce at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her cunning tactics to win cases and expose wrongdoing. A gender reversal of the original 1986 TV series of the same name, Matlock (1986), starring Andy Griffith in the lead role of criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock. This show has only the most tangential relationship to the original series. For legal reasons they had to give Dean Hargrove a “based on the Matlock series” credit. In order for Matlock to be hired by a New York law firm, they would have to verify the status of her attorney’s license through one of three official mechanisms, each of which is carefully managed by the state.
Remake of Matlock (1986)
As soon as I saw that Kathy Bates was going to star in a Matlock reboot, I texted my mom asking if it was something we would watch together. We live in different states, but we watch shows together every once in a while. And I thought this would be a great choice. I love the idea of an older woman returning to the workforce. Especially a 70 year old woman!
Let me be clear
I am not a fan of legal drama, and while I’m sure that as a 54 year old pre-DVRS person, when we were sometimes captive viewers of shows we’d rather not watch, I unintentionally, accidentally watched an episode or two of the original Matlock. But I was definitely not a fan of the show. That said, I jumped right in, because everything I’ve seen with Kathy Bates, *Misery*, *Primary Colors*, *Dolores Claiborne*, etc., etc., etc., has been excellent. So I was confident that *Matlock* would be stellar, or Kathy Bates wouldn’t have been involved. I watched the pilot and loved everything about it.
Fortunately, none of the characters are annoying or extremely unlikable
Since I haven’t watched the original *Matlock*, I had nothing to compare it to. I’ve watched law shows and detective series that were so fast paced and complicated that I got lost. But *Matlock* is easy and lighthearted, and I was right with all the twists and turns. As other reviewers have said, there is a surprise at the end that we can’t talk about, but hints were dropped the entire time. If I were to compare the show to another show, I would say it’s like *Columbo*.
It’s like Mattie said, “No one sees us coming” YES the old woman super power!
There are times when “Mattie” struggles with the changing times, she hasn’t practiced law in many years, and then there are times when she seems to be clumsy, so the person can fall straight into a trap.
