Story
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci share why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton has said that the film would only be made if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role.

I’ll admit I went into this film with no expectations, anticipation, or nostalgia for the first film. I wasn’t sure if this was the movie for me, but as the film began, the camera panned over the land and the somber but clear soundtrack played, I thought I might like it. In fact, the score and soundtrack were one of the highlights, although it was less Joker and more Adams Family.
It was weird, sometimes funny, and cute
We were introduced to a lot of fun and quirky characters, both old and new, including three generations of the Deetz family, but I liked that the film didn’t just rehash the first one. For example, while Lydia Deetz in the original film was weird and sympathetic to the paranormal, her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, is skeptical and haunted by everything while also giving off a Wednesday Adams vibe. If you think about it, the story naturally had to go in a new direction while also incorporating the afterlife. While the story is over-the-top and sometimes predictable, it feels right, but it felt like it had a lot to live up to as it approached its 45-minute runtime.
If you liked the first one, will you like this one?
Overall, it’s fun, and I enjoyed Beetlejuice better than I expected, and I think it could attract new fans. I can’t say, but I wish it was closer to Halloween because it would be a fun, slightly spooky affair.
